Synopsis: Panchlait is based on the short story written by Phanishwar Nath Renu, set in 1954’s rural India, it revolves around a village consisting of different communities (tolas). One of them is Mahato who have all decided to procure a Panchlait (Kerosene Lamp) for themselves, as having one is a mark of honor. After several efforts, finally they do manage to acquire it, but at the last moment they realise that no one knows how to light the lamp. On the other side, a romance was brewing between Godhan and Gulri Kaki’s daughter Munri, but this love had a price to pay as Godhan was outcasted from the community by Gulri Kaki’s appeal to the Panchayat. But apparently Godhan is the only one in their community who knows to light the lamp. After much of imploring, Godhan agrees to it. Finally, the story ends on the note, Godhan lighting the lamp and the gleaming light transforming the darkness of the village and of the villager’s hearts into a kindle of light, bringing joy and happiness.
