(Hindustani/2017/154mins) | Dir. Vishal Bhardwaj

Synopsis: A period drama set in the 1940s, the film straddles two parallel narratives: that of the historical trajectory of the Indian National Army’s drive to claim India back from the British by joining the Japanese in their fight against the Allies, and the romantic triangle between stuntwoman and movie star, Julia (Kangana Ranaut) and the two male protagonists, film director and former action star, Rustom Billimoria (Saif Ali Khan) and soldier Nawab Malik (Shahid Kapoor), who is entrusted as Julia’s security detail when she is sent to Burma to entertain the Indian infantry stationed there. The two narratives are intertwined through economic intrigue and the love story between Julia and Malik. The film places the Indian Independence movement within a secular space defined by the goals of the INA; in departing from the normative religious zeal that accompanies such narratives, the film excavates marginal characters from the entertainment industry of the 40s and positions them in the centre of this pre-independence wartime saga.
